What are per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic chemicals characterised by fluorine atoms bonded to carbon atoms. These compounds have unique properties that make them resistant to heat, water, and oil, which has led to their widespread use in various industrial and consumer applications. Some common uses of PFAS include:

  1. Water and Stain Repellents: PFAS are often used in water- and stain-resistant coatings for fabrics, carpets, and upholstery.
  2. Nonstick Cookware: PFAS, such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), have been used to produce nonstick cookware.
  3. Firefighting Foams: PFAS have been used in firefighting foams, particularly aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF), to combat liquid fuel fires.
  4. Electronics: PFAS are used to produce certain electronic components and devices due to their electrical insulating properties.
  5. Food Packaging: PFAS are sometimes used in food packaging materials to provide grease resistance.

One of the main concerns associated with PFAS is their persistence in the environment and their ability to accumulate in living organisms. PFAS are often referred to as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down easily in the environment and can persist for a long time. There are also health concerns related to PFAS exposure, as some studies have suggested potential links to adverse health effects, including developmental and reproductive issues, immune system impacts, and certain cancers.

Due to these concerns, there has been increasing regulatory attention and efforts to phase out or restrict the use of certain PFAS, and there is ongoing research to better understand their environmental and health implications.
