What is ProUCL Software | US EPA?

ProUCL (US EPA) is a software application used to assess air, water, and land pollution, including helping users comply with the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Clean Air Act (CAA) and National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAPs). ProUCL can help design, implement, and monitor pollution control technology projects. It can also be used to manage project data. ProUCL helps the decision-makers make correct decisions on polluted sites that are cost-effective and protective of human health and the environment.

ProUCL is funded and managed by The United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) through its Office of Research and Development (ORD).

ProUCL software offers a variety of benefits, including the ability to customize reports, track progress, and receive alerts when compliance milestones are reached. Additionally, ProUCL provides a user portal that makes it easy to connect with other environmental professionals across the globe. ProUCL software offers faster and more accurate results than traditional methods, such as manual calculations or data entry. ProUCL US EPA makes data analysis easier and quicker for business owners with its interactive features.

Using environmental data management software with ProUCL for environmental risk assessment

Environmental risk assessment (ERA) identifies, assesses, and manages environmental risks in an organization. Risk is the potential for adverse consequences arising from an event or course of action. ERA aims to identify, assess, and manage environmental risks that could harm the environment, human health and safety, or economic development.

ESdat, data management software, can export data in ProUCL, EDIF, Excel, or AGS formats. ProUCL provides many calculations useful for contaminated sites, including 95 percentile calculations using a variety of data distributions (i.e. normal, log-normal, non-parametric). ESdat with the ProUCL export is an excellent tool for supporting environmental risk assessment for risk assessors who require the ProUCL format.

Providing laboratory results to risk assessors from ESdat

Risk assessors often have particular data layout preferences, which are quite different to other staff. Many will use ESdat to filter specific datasets; others prefer only a spreadsheet.

Generally, risk assessors prefer one of the following ESdat styles of layout:

  1. Chemistry Exceedance Tables, such as the examples at ChemTables, where the Non-Detect status and the result are in a single cell, with exceedances highlighted.
  2. A format where the result and the prefix are in adjacent cells. This is the same format used by the ProUCL application, which Risk Assessors heavily use.

ESdat has two places from which data can be exported in ProUCL format:

Option 1: Once a Chemistry Table has been produced and is in Excel, the data can be exported to ProUCL using the ProUCL button on the Exceedance Formatting Toolbar. Although this method is convenient for extracting data from a previously exported Table, it doesn’t include an option to group the data beyond any filtering applied before table generation.

However, if grouping is necessary, it can be added after generating the ProUCL format. The Sample Headers (i.e. Location Code) can be copied from the ESdat Table and pasted next to the data exported to ProUCL. The data will align exactly.

Option 2: From the main ESdat Interface, data can be dynamically filtered and exported to ProUCL (or Excel in ProUCL format).

The ProUCL export is now a very powerful way to provide a complete Chemistry Table layout compatible with ProUCL. Still, it is in a format that can be useful for other purposes Risk Assessors often require.
